About This Quote

I was taught that it is disrespectful and cowardly to show fear. I was told that I had to be strong and fearless, and that the only way I could control my fear was to stand tall and face it straight on. If I was afraid, it meant that I was weak, and as such, less of a man than those who didn't show fear. At first I believed this.

But, as time went on, I realized that it wasn't true. Fear is respect. There's a big difference between the two.

Fear is respect given to something beyond our control and not worth fighting about. Fear comes from caring about what others think of you and what they will say about you if you do something they don't want you to do or say something they don't want you to say.
